I thought to open a post where we can share reviews of Draw the Line when we find them. Here is the first one: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/sep/06/david-gray-draw-the-line Guardian/Observer 3/5
As we approach the end of the
decade, expect an avalanche of lists, including those for its
bestselling albums. Dido and Robbie Williams will dominate, in the UK
at least, suggesting a divided nation oscillating between sedation and
light entertainment. Tucked in behind should be an interloper with an
acoustic guitar, David Gray, who began his career back when it was all
Britpop and no one cared for earnest singer-songwriters. So Gray didn't hit pay dirt until his fourth album, 2000's multi-platinum White Ladder.
After that, singer-songwriters were everywhere, although the man
himself has never repeated the trick, settling down for two more albums
of still lucrative MOR. Although looser, Draw the Line
doesn't reinvent the Gray wheel. He can still write a melody and
there's a pleasing bite to the lyrics, which allude to the state of the
world post-Iraq, with Fugitive's "crouched in a hole like a
mud-streaked fugitive" inspired by Saddam himself.
Take care ! Marcel

Seems like a pretty lazy review to me... half of it is just pointless introduction. Did they even listen to the album? I give their review one star.
Also found a review for Fugitive (3/5)... http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a175103/david-gray-fugitive.html
If memory serves right, David Grey's 1998 breakthrough White Ladder was hailed by Jo Whiley as an album that "makes life better by its very existence". A pretty bold claim, and despite the pleasantness of 'Sail Away' and 'Please Forgive Me', one that wasn't entirely borne out by the record. Still, it went on to shift a few million copies and thrust Grey's Dylan-esque warble into the spotlight, and you felt that he'd probably worked hard enough to deserve his success.
Despite that album's 'Babylon' allegedly being used to torture inmates at Guantanamo Bay, Grey has since consolidated his position as a superior singer-songwriter to many who followed in his path. 'Fugitive', the lead single from eighth album Draw The Line, isn't a wild departure. A perky mix of piano, acoustic strumming and earnest lyrics about trying when you're in love, sung in that voice of course, it's a solid return that longtime fans will no doubt welcome.

David Gray: Draw the Line, CD review
David Gray creates shows his flair for melodic rock in Draw the Line. Rating:

David Gray
Draw the Line
POLYDOR
“I am the sound of money washing down the drain,” sings David Gray on his
eighth album, Draw the Line. And, OK, the whole-grain mustard-voiced
singer’s songwriting has lost the twitchy urgency that made White Ladder
such a hit, but he still does a moving line in ruefully mature, melodic,
mid-tempo rock.

I have never understood why people who are into some other kind of music like I don't know what - may it be techno, hip hop or dance floor - feel the urge to publish a review of something they obviously fail to understand in the slightest. It takes quite a bit to make me loose my temper but such so called journalists do. Sorry. David and his magnificent band members deserve better than that. How can anyone not see the beauty in this album, I just don't get it. Sorry for the ranting folks.

rena, no need to apologise i found myself getting rather angry when reading that, especially the part about he didnt understand how it had took him so long............. well if he knew anything he might have realised he had toured with ALISM then he toured with the greatest hits! dissappointing to say the least! i was also reading todays daily mirror (in the uk) and looked at the new releases music part and there was no part about david gray, there was Jay z, pixie lott and muse but nothing about mr.grays..... mind you looking at play/amazon websites most popular upcoming albums it doesnt appear he will get close to the number 1 spot which the last few albums came in at!

Well Pipopieman, someone like Jay Z provides music that is far easier to digest than David's. And some people just aren't used to switching on that mysterious grey mass inside their heads when it comes to music. David's lyrics are food for thought and not everyone is ready to handle that. That is the way I see it. I have found another review, from The Bordermail They call the album 'blissful'. Yay. David Gray - Draw The Line
IT took the world quite a while to discover the musical genius of David Gray. The British balladeer released his first album in 1993 but it wasn’t until 2000’s White Ladder that we all paid attention. It’s
been four years since Gray delivered a studio record and fans will be
thankful the wait is over with the release of Draw The Line. Gentle
and charming as usual, Draw The Line opens with the semi-lively
Fugitive, which showcases Gray’s likable style and is a perfect
introduction for new listeners. The acoustic title track is another immediately impressive tune with a real sing-along chorus — try to stop that foot tapping. Among
the highlights is a sprawling duet with Annie Lennox titled Full Steam
Ahead and Kathleen an earnest epode with US folk singer Jolie Holland. RATING: ★★★★ IN SHORT: Blissful Posted By: Jamie Horne on 9/09/2009 9:59:00 PM

I am shocked and upset by these reviews as well. How can they put a songwriter like David Gray down who has sold over 12mill. albums and sells out shows all over the world. Just don't get it. Have they even taken a listen to his music, been to any of his shows? I have been to many concerts and like all different types of music but have never seen a crowd at a concert be so drawn into the music like I have at a DG concert. And no one has moved me more than his singing. I'm confused~ this new album is beyond any words INCREDIBLE. Maybe someone needs to send these prudes a copy of his CD'S.lol Kari

And once I get my copy of the album and hear it in its entirety, I will post my own review on here.

Although you have to respect/accept other peoples views etc, i'm a bit angered by some of the reviews too.
The main criticism appears to be that he hasn't really changed his musical style between albums. My friends even seem to agree with the reviews, they say the new material sounds exactly the same to them. I guess you just need to follow his music, because to me I can really hear a big difference in the composition between Draw The Line and Life in Slow Motion. It's rawer for one, and Keith's drums really change the sound in places (just listen to the intro to Stella the Artist). What kind of radical change were people expecting? Short of changing his vocal style, what else could he possibly do? A rap? It's David Gray for gods sake.

I agree, but reviews are one thing, it is about what people really think and I know in the long run this album will be appreciated by lots of people. If David would have changed more radically, they would have said David Gray is not David Gray anymore and therefor not good.... there is always something.... It has something todo with the genre and personality too, David is not a bad boy and therefor boring to some... If he was all new and this was his first album, they would have lifted him all the way to the top to drop him on the very next album, that is how it works... There has been quite a few reasonable reviews, we should not start complaining yet... Take care ! Marcel PS: May have been an idea to put his cover of barbie girl on the record
