Do the kids know what a record store is? Do they even know what a record is? Most kids know about CDs and DVDs, but I suspect that if you pulled out some of your old vinyl albums, they'd probably guess "Frisbee" or "dinner plate" before "musical recording".
Tomorrow is the chance for all 'modern Victorians' to expose the kids to not just new music but the whole atmosphere of a place staffed and frequented by music lovers - the record store, best described in Nick Hornby's novel High Fidelity. April 19th is Record Store Day, when all of these- independently- owned music shops stores will simultaneously link and act as one with the purpose of celebrating the culture and unique place that they occupy both in their local communities and nationally.
Also in the UK this day will be celebrated. The idea for a Record Store Day in Britain came from this US Record Store Day, which has been running for several years in the USA and Canada and has gathered support from acts across the musical spectrum, including Will Oldham, Kurt Wagner, Pearl Jam, Vampire Weekend, Mike Patton, Steve Malkmus and the Jicks, REM, Henry Rollins and Metallica. Malkmus and Vampire Weekend have produced special one-off records for the day or they support a store while others will be performing short live sets or doing signing sessions.
Fifteen independent record stores around the UK, including London's Rough Trade and Sister Ray, Manchester's Piccadilly Records, Leeds' Jumbo Records and Avalance in Edinburgh, have formed the Coalition Of UK Indie Stores, which will fight for the interests of indie music retailers. The hope is the UK equivalent will capture the artists' and public's imagination in the same way. And to mark the April 19th day, many of the stores involved in the Coalition will host live events.
Among them, are Rough Trade East and Piccadilly Records, whose line-ups are below:

Tomorrow, April 19, music lovers from Memphis to Melbourne will unite to celebrate a vital global institution: the independent record retailer. Yes, this Saturday marks the inaugural Record Store Day, and with it comes all manner of free swag, contests, red hot exclusive releases, in-store performances, DJ sets, signings, meet-and-greets, and other assorted hoopla.
With so many goodies and so much going down at spots around the world, it may be tricky getting a handle on just what you can expect tomorrow. Keeping that in mind, Pitchfork has assembled a little Record Store Day highlight reel. Read on, friends, and start gathering that allowance/beer/trust fund money. You're going to be buying some records tomorrow! (And, we sure hope, buying records many other days this year too.)
The list of participating stores can be found here.
First, of course, there are the exclusive releases, several of which you've already read about in these pages. Stephen Malkmus and Matador will serve up the "Cold Son" 10", Vampire Weekend whipped up that "A-Punk" 7", and Death Cab for Cutie, R.E.M., Built to Spill, and the Black Keys each have their offerings as well.
What's more, Merge will issue copies of a free split 7" featuring exclusive tracks from Destroyer and Wye Oak to participating stores, and Beggars will also make available a Breeders 7", three Teenagers 7"s, and a special 12" version of that Four Songs by Arthur Russell tribute, featuring Jens Lekman and more.
The Record Store Day faithful can also enter to win a copy of Tompkins Square Records' People Take Warning! box set, autographed by Tom Waits!
