Merry Christmas to each and every one of you! All the days of the year we should be thankful for friends and family and health and shelter and all the things that we are so lucky to have, but at Christmas time it is even more apparent.Maybe you couldn't afford to buy that big crown roast to make for Christmas dinner, but you do have something to eat. So many people do not have anything. Maybe santa won't be bringing your children the latest video game console or the expensive bike they wanted, but if santa brings them anything it is more than most children will find on Christmas morning.Maybe you got stuck in the airport due to a blizzard and will be late to your Chirstmas clebration, or might not make it at all, but some men and woman will spend thier holiday thousands of miles form home, fighting in a war that shouldn't be happening.I sound like Bono, not quite as eloquent, but just as obnoxious . But really, I feel so lucky to have what I have- even if I am not getting that Roberto Cavalli dress I wanted. The simple meal that tastes so much better when shared with loved ones, the simple gifts that show it really is the thought that counts, the shelter over my head, the feeling of comfort and safety when I go to sleep at night and the fact that I have health enough to get me through at least another day.I hope all of you feel as lucky as I do no matter how big or how little your celebration is the simple fact that you are able to have one at all is a gift.Love to you all!

Yeah, let's spare a thought for all those poor non-Christians out there. Just kiddin' Courtney, lovely sentiments.
    Allegedly.

Ok, enough of that, back to the gluttony!
Geez another moment of weakness and a post like that and I might give away the fact that my tough b*tchiness is all an act!

there's two things wrong with that statement.
Bono is not eloquent and you are no way even in the same league obnoxious as he is! oh but the sentiment of the rest of the post was spot on. This year I'm thankful simply for my family and friends at this time of year

It is hideous though. In all seriousness, this time of year really hammers home the gulf between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'. Without even looking overseas, it's pretty hard to stomach. Seeing homeless people in doorways, being ignored by people walking by with bursting bags full of things they don't need. And single out of work mums spending what little money they have to survive on toys, just to make their kids feel, for one day, as worthwhile as their friends. The gluttony, the waste, the spending... It's shameful really.
    Allegedly.

it's really hard to get people to understand that though. my mum has for the last few years been asking my Dad to give her a heifer for christmas so she can donate it to An Bothar, a charity group who will send the animal to a family in Africa. And he just wont do it. Keeps buying her gifts instead, gifts she can easily go without. People are too used to the greedy excess to change

my brother, who has always been very financially successful, and to whom having enough spare money to buy a fancy car has always been important and a show of his standing amongst his peers, and who i love very dearly, quite astonishingly bought us each (admittedly amongst a few other things) a goat for a third world village last year. there is hope. as we, as a family, grow older, the fun of christmas day is in being together. and while i'm sure we could all do more to even the planet out, i'd like to wish everybody a very happy christmas, urge you to take stock of and appreciate what you've got (including, hopefully, compassion for the poor misguided souls who put material wants at the top of their list), and for all of us, and the lost people who are yet to discover our wonderful little spot on t'interweb, i hope for a less agressive and marvelously confusing future. as does herself. don't spoil your own christmas raging against people who don't care.hohoho. buy me an xbox 360, b1tches. and an aston martin.

This has definitely been an eye-opening Christmas for us. We are dead broke. And by dead broke, I mean we-don't-know-where-rent-for-January-is-going-to-come-from broke. The only Christmas presents we got are for Samantha, and that wasn't even our money. She received two of one gift last Christmas, and we saved the money we got when we returned one. We used some of that money for a few little presents for Samantha, and the rest is for food. We'll be having a very Ramen Christmas this year. It's been a rough few months not knowing what will happen. My health is somewhat poor, but I don't have (and can't afford) insurance, so for now, visiting a doctor is out of the question. We won't be seeing my Dad and his wife and other family members this year, as they are all out of town. I doubt seriously that my Dad will even get Samantha a present. Society's pressure of being "the man" and "the provider" got to my husband so much that he had a bit of a meltdown and let his sobriety slip one night. And for all I know, we'll be living out of our car soon.Despite all that, I feel quite blessed, and I'm looking forward to Christmas morning more than ever. I can't wait to just sit by the Christmas tree and watch Samantha play with the lights. After all, we have a tree, a roof over our heads (for now), and plenty of ramen. Despite our difficulties, we still have more than most.Happy Holidays, everyone.

Heather, we're having a very similar Christmas- we're stretched very thin too. My husband's parents give cash the week after Thanksgiving for us to go buy presents for ourselves (from them), wrap them, and then THEY are surprised by what they got us on Christmas morning! In the past, this has been a great arrangement, but this year? Bills. It was gone before we even got it. There's almost nothing under the tree, which is fine, because since Owen came along, life is so not about 'stuff' for me anymore. I got a few things for Owen last month, using money that should've gone for bills, and that's pretty much all he's getting from us. Fortunately he's still so young that he has no idea what's going on and we have warm, loving family who are more than willing to dote on him. I try to keep in mind, just like you said, that we have a warm home, grub in the cupboards (we love creamed corn, right?), and most importantly, we have each other. I know it sounds totally corny, but it's completely true. What's actually been a little fun about being broke is that I've been diving into my craft stuff and made some cool decorative stuff for people. I had a couple of empty double-matted picture frames and I rubber-stamped on them. One is a jungle theme and I'm going to put in a picture of Owen's cousin in her giraffe Halloween costume and give it to her grandparents. Well, more later...Owen's grandparents are here to babysit!Peace and love everyone!

I admire your spiritsJocelyn and Heather and I hope you have a lovely day with your loved ones. I was about to have a moan about christmas but y'all humbled me a bit and made me think what it's all about. My only gripe is that I'm not with my boyfriend till NYE and this has made me a little sad, as I always feel the left one out in the family. I'd give up all my presents and turkey to spend the day with him I remember when I believed in Santa Claus, things seemed so much simpler then...Merry Christmas x

s jocelyn and heather. i so know what you're going through right now. we've been on our last $100 for the past week, and payday isn't till the 1st. gas is what's killing us right now. as hubby has to commute over 50 miles each day to get to work. we had a lovely x-mas nonetheless. i had been buying things for eva all year long. so she was covered. i got rob some socks, and that was it. he gave me a watercolor painting he's been working on. we have amazing parents, he and i. his mom gave us $300 which all went to gas and food-- life saver! and my mom gave us a much needed answering machine and a $50 to AMC theaters! i'm so excited about that last one!!anyway. i hope you get through this, lovely women!!

I wanted to write something really eloquent and heart-felt, but I gave up. In stead I just want to say that I'm sorry to hear several of you are going through such rough times, I truly hope things will get better for you all. Merry christmas and lots of love to all of you.[ 27 December 2006: Message edited by: Henriette ]
