Being new to the Boards I'm not sure if you all have talked about this or if it holds any interest for anyone but on Google Maps you can drive around Solva, Wales, the village where DG spent part of his youth - what a quaint and charming little village!

Since I can't have ya'll thinking I'm some sort of whack job weirdo stalker or voyeur, here's some background if you'll allow me:  Last semester I had to write a paper for a literature class on William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy.  They lived in a place called Dove Cottage in the English Lake District.  Being a student (albeit a 50 year old student) I didn't have airfare to Grasmere so I went onto Google maps and typed in "Dove Cottage". Lo' and behold I was able to spend an entire Saturday driving around Grasmere stopping at cottage gates and checking out the vistas that Wordsworth (and his sister) wrote about.  Did the same thing this morning with Solva - awesome!

If you're unfamiliar with Google Maps all you have to do is type "Solva, United Kingdom" in the address bar.  When the map appears, click on the village of Solva and then click STREET VIEW in the pop-up window (Street View link will be underneath the photo, upper right corner of pop-up window).

Alternatively, you can look for a yellow man on the left side of the screen then drag & drop him anywhere on the map.  I dropped the little yellow icon man onto the village of St. David's - wow - how fricking gorgeous ... from there you can see the sea ...

There will be arrows on the streets - click the arrows to drive your car.  You can also pan, look left & right and spin around using the four arrows at the top of the zoom bar on the left side of the screen.

    I assume you've seen this?

It looks like a nice place. Although I can imagine it is exactly the kind of place where living for a while can make you write songs found on the A Century Ends album..

Ak11 - Can't thank you enough, I had not seen those videos of the 'magical realm".  It was wonderful to see DG with his beautiful little daughters and to have a guided tour of South Solva, very generous of him to share so much with his fans.  Thanks again for posting the video!!  Cheers ~ pam

Yes, yes, yes - I know... was trying to explain how I discovered Google Maps and why ... I can be SO verbose sometimes, sorry if it got confusing!

I'm with you on the Lakes District - seems hard to beat that kind of awesomeness and a trip there has been on my Bucket List for a long, long time - adding Wales now.

I had so much fun "driving" around St. David's on Sunday,  drove SE on a road called Ffordd Caerfai from St. David's to the sea.  Stopped at some cottages and to read some road signs too.  What a magical place, even from a Google car!

Take care - hope you're having a good day!

DCA - thanks a bunch for sharing your pix - looks like a wonderful holiday!  How long did you stay??

If you're into Wordsworth here's something I can share with you:  While in Grasmere, Wordsworth shared a cottage with his sister, Dorothy and she kept journals that Wm used for inspiration for his poetry.  The surviving journals (one volume was lost) were published in 1987 as The Grasmere Journal by Dorothy Wordsworth with an introduction by nephew Jonathan Wordsworth.  It's a beautiful, illustrated book covering May 1800 through January 1803 (sans the lost journal).  TTYL ~ Pam aka Ms. Linen Big Smile

My Dad's family emigrated in the 1630's from England and the rest of the clan abandoned Ireland in the ensuing century.  Every time I go to London I secretly wish they'd stayed put.  Seeing your pix makes me feel the same way. I'm such an Anglophile ... I think I should be living on the other side of the pond [sigh]

Music  Crying, wringing hands and cursing fate ...

I'm glad I'm not the only geek who drives around on Google Maps.  I'm a map nerd to begin with, so I've always loved exploring that way since I discovered it.  Then, at one of the shows I went to, DG mentioned something about visiting the street where he lived and recorded White Ladder via Google.  I drove around there and added Solva to my little tour as well.

ropreston!  I'm a total map nerd too.  I remember the first time I saw a globe, I thought it was a puzzle to be put together and have been hooked on maps and globes ever since.  Cheers to a fellow map/googlemap geek Beer
