Such a fun night!
Such a pleasure to meet you DCA! I knew we'd have tons to talk about and I couldn't wait to pick your brain. You are a very interesting and intelligent man, and so open and honest...which I think you said gets you in trouble at times! Ha!! Here's to keeping it real!!
Wow, I had no idea Ryan Adams was so goofy! He would sing a song just dripping with emotion and so heartfelt...and then everyone would applaud and he would immediately go into a stand-up routine! Then he'd make a sarcastic remark i.e. "here's another one about my feelings"...and go into song again. Seriously...I felt like a yo-yo....up down up down up down. All of it genuine though. He sounded GREAT, very clean, pure voice. And when he was funny he was VERY funny..extremely sharp and quick with the wit. Reminded me very much of David Gray when he interacts with the audience and starts speaking off the cuff. Such a huge sign of intelligence to be able to sit in the moment, all cells firing at full capacity while 5,000 eyes are on you. Ugh...some people have it all!
Anyway, Two was by far my favorite of the night. I love If I Am a Stranger, of course, but I have never heard Two done the way he did it last night. Slower, quieter, slightly more angst filled than usual. Ashes & Fire is now firmly in my top 3...do you remember what he said it was about DCA?? I think he said "this one is about being really stoned walking around NY, and it is also about nothing". Does that sound right? Sylvia Plath was great...I love anything on a piano. Plus, I named my cat after Sylvia Plath...the actual lady, not the song. But there you have it.
Nice set list with the anecdotes and all DCA!!! Did you do that from memory? Please say no or else I really need to get my head checked!
And last but not least...here's a favorite of mine from James McMurtry, whom Jason will be joining soon.
