David Gray will be featured on BBC Four's next episode of Songwriter's Circle.

Singer-songwriters get together in intimate venues to perform their own classics, chat about their work and collaborate musically.

    Next on:

    Friday, 22:30 on BBC Four

David Gray, KT Tunstall, Ray LaMontagne

Three premier singer-songwriters play solo, taking it in turns to perform their signature songs and play together at west London's intimate Bush Hall. Chatting about the art and process of songwriting, Cheshire-born David Gray plays songs like Babylon and This Year's Love, plus material from his album Foundling. KT Tunstall plays Other Side and Black Horse and the Cherry Tree from her million-selling debut album Eye of the Telescope and songs from her recent Tiger Sun album. American Ray LaMontagne plays Trouble as well as songs from his fourth album God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise.

Waa, waa, waa!!!  I want to see all three of these![:'(]

I swear, all we get on BBC America is Gordon Ramsay and old Star Trek reruns!  Maybe an Antiques Roadshow thrown in every now and again.

Oh, well, I'll just look forward to hearing all about it...

Please try to share. Much better than the Antique Road Show, I agree.

So? I am sure this was great - maybe someone would be so kind to share a review with us who weren't able to get BBC 4, please? What did David play? What did he talk about?

For you lucky people in the UK - you can watch the episode  for the next nine days on BBC Four.

There is also a 4:33 minutes clip of David performing Breathe here. So we know he played that one.

Unfortunately both videos come with the info that they aren't available in my area. Sigh.

    Hi All,

Jus watched my recording, here is what was shown (of David)

    Shine (solo)
    Ain't no Love (solo)
    Babylon (solo)
    TYL (solo)
In the Morning (together with Ray/KT Tunstall)

Good stuff with some nice background info on the songs too, I did expect them to play more songs together and maybe some Foundling stuff too but hey... Smile

I will look into ways of sharing some of this... YouTube has warned me a few times for publishing things so not sure if it will go up there...

    Take care !

    Marcel.

I watched this last night and thought it was awesome! David's choice of songs were great, i was a little dissapointed (as marcel said) with the amount he played and the lack of Foundling, but it was still a great watch Smile

They each played 4 songs (+In the Morning at the end together).. David kickstarted the show off with Shine, which was beautiful to say the least.. and then KT played a song, then Ray and then back to David in that order..

It was interesting to note that i don't think i've ever heard David sing/play Babylon on his own before, nevertheless he did a fine job of it! Before he played every song (apart from TYL) he also explained how they were created or how they were inspired..

The only song that i recognised from KT was The Other Side which was great! I absolutely love her voice.. and her other songs were fab too. She pointed out at one point how she thought her, DG and Ray were nothing like each other at all. She was right ofcource haha but the contrast in the different music really did make the show into something special. I remember laughing to myself actually in one of the songs she played (Black horse and the cherry tree) due to the amount of pedals she was using, it was really quite extraordinary lol.. but a great song.

Ray was fantastic as usual, i can only recall Rock'n'Roll Radio and Trouble (please correct me if i'm wrong) but his set was amazing. He explained before the start of one of his songs that he thinks when playing music live, there should be an invisible barrier between him and the audience to create a sort of illusion of mystery.. It was a very deep explanation and a real eye-opener into his playstyle as a performer.

They all finished with In The Morning which concluded a wonderful show.

I can't really think of much more to say, try and get access to it if you can, its worth the watch!

Thank you Teemto and Marcel. It comes as a surprise that there was nothing from Foundling. Still I wish I could have seen this. It's always interesting to get an insight on David's inspirations and songwriting.

That's an interesting comment by Ray as well. I think that the invisible barrier he mentioned is there, actually it's deeper and wider than the Grand Canyon. And for the mystery - it's there as long as the song played is good and deep enough.

And Marcel, youtube isn't half the fun it used to be, isn't it? Half of the videos on there are inaccessable due to area restrictions. My personal opinion is that record labels are missing out on big promotional oportunities that way.

Just one more thing - BBC Four put up a video of David playing Breathe. Now where did that come from when he did not play the song? Does anyone know? Could someone who can access the video (ie is located in the UK) have a look and tell us if it's an outtake from the actual show, please?

Thanks for the great reviews. I hope to get to see it.

@ Rena, is it me losing my mind these days, or didn't they play Breathe in the beginning of the DTL tour. I remember seeing it played, but then dropped from the set lists.  Would have loved for it to have come back on the tour.  Sad  I felt that DG got frustrated at the fact that people just wouldn't be quite to listen to the intro that he gave the song. It is a beautiful song, and deserves to be revisited.... just saying.  I can't remember if he and Neill did it at The Mountain back in 2009, I do remember Kathleen being done by David solo. It was amazing, first time I'd heard it.  Geeked  DCA, you recall that right?

Rena: Could the Breath performance be the first performance ever of that song he did on some BBC show years ago? That's on youtube at least.
