    Hi Marcel,

I have never been to America before, maybe oneday.

there is some good info on this site - nycvisit.com/ - some of the tours sound great.

Enjoy New York, New York so good they named it twice.

    Hi Elysium,

Nice to hear from you, hope you are okay. Although I have been to America quite a few times, I never took any time to see NYC. Plenty of things to see and do.... I have booked some stuff already and with the dollar so low we will probably do a bit of shopping I suppose... :)

    Take care !

    Marcel.

When you go to New York you will enjoy it, no matter what it is.  Go for a walk through Soho, eat at an italian restaurant in Little Italy.  Be sure to stop in some (as they say) "hole in the wall" pizzeria somewhere--have great sushi.  This will be good.  There are museums, there are parks, there is the feeling, the awe inspiring and poetical influence of merely the people moving, the cars streaming, cats, people, bakeries, tobacco shops, taxis, baseball games and irish pubs--the noise--oh it will be noisier than anything ever, but pleasant for a time.  Do this and it will be good.

Then, if you truly wish to get a real experience of New York--you must go to Grand Central Station early in the morning on a clear day and catch a ride to Poughkeepsie, NY on the Metro North line.  It will not be until you ride along this railroad (the most famous for two centuries of American train-rides--passing through the famous Hudson Highlands--passing West Point and Bannerman's Island) that you will get a real sense of what New York is, for New York is far greater and magnificent than the mere city.  Spend some time in Poughkeepsie or walk across the Mid-Hudson Valley Bridge to the West Shore where a small town subsides--Highland.  There is a little area and downtown with a Methodist church, two pizzerias and a bakery--one restaurant called Sal's Place and a chinese restaurant.  It is not anything to be amazed by, but it is there and you might find a true sense of what New York is if you go there.  And when you do, enjoy it.

    I hope this helps.

    Bon Voyage

    Hi Marcel,

I am sure you will have a great time in NYC. Don't forget to give a full report afterwards.

TiredIdeas' suggestions sound most promising. Hard to think of anything else but what I remember as impressive from my visit to NYC  was the ferry from Long Island to New Jersey (?) past the Statue of Liberty and back. The Guggenheim Museum, of course! An authentic dinner in China Town. An intimate club gig somewhere. Very touristic but hard to be beaten is a visit to the top of the Empire State building. I loved a helicopter ride over Manhattan, a bit pricey but well worth it.  And not to forget the simple pleasure of having a good American breakfast at a diner somewhere down the road.

I think the best way to get around Manhattan is by those hop on hop off busses that run all day.

Don't forget to bring an extra (and empty!) suitcase for all the shopping.

Take care and have lots of fun.

The water in NYC is actually clean water (transported via aqueduct) from upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains.

And yes, I am from New York State, though living elsewhere now--otherwise I would participate as tourguide..

While it may be too late, I just found this site that's useful for booking hotel rooms. It has an extreme level of detail, listing the size of the room, any possible noise concerns, and even the view a guest can expect from the balcony. Users can ask the site to recommend a room based on this criteria. Each hotel also receives an overall review, along with a listing of information such as the availability of WiFi. Visitors to the site are encouraged to leave their own reviews, and they can request for a hotel to be added to the database if it isn’t there already.
