David Gray: Santogold – a Brooklyn-based artist who does dubby, dancy pop music. She was recommended to me by Amazon because I'd bought some other weird record. Out of curiosity, I listened to a few snippets on her MySpace page and thought they were really good; especially a track called 'L.E.S Artistes'."

Indeed a really good song! My fav local radio station is playing this song on heavy rotation!

Santi White's aka Santogold's influences are fantastic and varies 'as her animal print accessories'. "Nina Simone and Bad Brains are my two biggest vocal influences", she says. Growing up listening to acts as broad as Nina Simone, Bad Brains, The Cure, The Pixies and Talking Heads, 'Santogold', the album, is a reflection of her musical tastes from power-punk, electronica, hip-hop, reggae, dub and pop-rock all mashed up into something distinctively unique and her own. Btw Santogold is a nickname she got from a classmate back in the '80's for her sister-girl style.

Santogold - Santogold: Straight out of New York city, singer-songwriter Santi White has roped in some of the hippest artists in the world to work their magic on her highly impressive debut. MIA associates Diplo and Switch have both laid down production for the self-titled release, and their efforts have helped shape a tremendously eclectic album.

Comparisons with MIA may prove hard to avoid but Santogold has a poppier, more polished vibe that could well help her to mainstream cross-over success. Recent single LES Artists is a brilliant slice of glammed-up melancholy, while the dub-infused Creator and reggae-inspired You'll Find A Way both feel like potential hits. The sound of the summer has arrived early. Rating 8/10
