This is the first review of this concert I could find:

David Gray adds some colour to the Jazz Festival

03/01/2008 12:40 PM | By Alice Johnson, Staff Reporter

Dubai: A packed Dubai Media City Amphitheatre waited patiently in the chilly night air for David Gray to appear.

Thousands of red bean bags lay under fans strewn about on the sandy grass; some had been sitting ready in their places for more than an hour.

At 10pm, a backdrop of coloured fairy lights illuminated Gray as he took to the stage with his most recent number for the first track. The once sedate crowd livened up a little watching the surprisingly charismatic singer on stage, who headed straight in with the second track Sail Away under atmospheric blue lighting.

Gray’s energy didn’t wane throughout the performance on Friday night, which saw him almost marching in time to the anthemic tracks he belted out with his gravely voice - much to the delight of the thousands of fans singing along with him.

Well, it finally happened! I saw DG live for the first time...and in Dubai (of all places). Although, Dubai is an extremely modern, rich city, full of shopping malls, expensive hotels and clubs, the music scene (in my view) has left a lot to be desired. But I must admit things have finally begun to change, as evidenced by the recent David Gray concert. Finally, there was a concert I was excited about attending. Dubai has always had 'big name' concerts like Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Elton John and other top 40 mainstream music performances which aren't my cup of tea, (to be honest I've avoided them like the plague). I just heard Celine Dion will be performing here and a friend called up inviting me to the concert. My answer was "I'd rather have my tongue stapled to the floor, and then have an army of red ants crawl into my mouth and eat me from the inside out"... sounds horrible doesn't it?... well not as bad as seeing Celine Live. My apologies to those who like her...music like art is 'subjective'....and I'd prefer not to be 'subjected' to Dion.

But enough digressing, let me just quickly review the Dubai concert. For starters, the promoters chose for David Gray to be part of a 'JAZZ' festival which not only did not make sense to me, but even David commented on this rather odd placement ( in his interview that occurred in the local paper this morning). A rock, alternative, or folk festival would have been more appropriate but then one should not complain. David did get a chance to perform in Dubai for the first time and the show was spectacular (as was David), apart from a few technical hiccups..but I prefer to ignore that.

The band, and David's voice was on top form. I can only compare it to DAVID GRAY LIVE (up to a point) and LIVE IN SLOW MOTION DVD concerts..and I tell you honestly, David's voice travelled far and wide across the amphitheatre and rattled the hearts and minds of even those who were not too familiar with his music.

All the favourites (for white ladder obssessed fans) were covered to keep the punters happy. A fantastic accoustic rendition of Babylon, Sail away and of course the encore of Please Forgive Me. But I enjoyed every single song including the covers Long Black Veil and Dylan's blood on the tracks. I don't want to recall the set list but it was a good mix of older and more recent work. If you've seen Live in Slow Motion DVD you might get a feel of what it was like. Unfortunately, shine, wisdom, and Faster, Sooner, Now were not performed which was a wee disappointing but then there's only so much you can squeeze into the alloted time and set list.

Over all the the concert was great as was David and the band. Unfortunately, the audience was a mix of David Gray fans and Jazz Festival Day visitors and I think David is more deserving of our more committed collective than was present there that night. I was there, suffering from a sore throat, which incidently gave me a very raspy, deep voice so I was able to sing along to all the songs in a surprisingly melodious manner. Another odd fact about the audience (considering Dubai expatriate community is rather varied) was that I was one of the few brown faces in a sea of white faces. I find it odd because I know a lot of the asian crowd (well, most of the sane ones anyway) really like David Gray, so I expected a far better representation of the asian community within audience but anyhow... I'm just happy that all of David's devoted Dubai fans made it so that's all that matters.

The band performed well with David and the music did sound rich and more melodic with amazing variations to each song that David's managed to cook up. I do have to admit, that everytime my eye drifted towards the drummer I kept hoping to see Clune, even for even a brief moment. I especially missed him for the last song of the evening; Please Forgive Me.

I hope some Web Administrator manager/moderator manages to take this, my rather sorry attempt at concert review, and forward it to David somehow (by perhaps taking a left at the traffic light on the internet highway) and have him read it. I just want DG to know, that "the gig was brilliant and your music is and has been appreciated by me and many others, so please keep making more of it...and do come back to Dubai. Hopefully the organizers will (next time) just arrange for a special DG concert rather than invite you to be part of festival...and perhaps, if opportunity allows and luck prevails, I can meet DG in person and have a bit of chinwag about globalism, global warming and Welsh close harmony singing...

I also moved all Dubai related reviews and links to videos from the announcements section over here where they will be easier to find and get more attention.

By the way, the review posted by nevermind yesterday has been reworked by gulfnews by now. So have another look here .

Is there anybody who can fill us in on what that swearing was all about?

I was there, not in the front row but somewhere in the middle... and i didn't hear much swearing to be honest. I know it took a while for david to tune his guitar (which i assume should have been done earlier) for one of the songs (i think it was My oh my) anyway, and a few in the crowd were getting restless and david said something like "it is not all easy, you know, there's some technical *** to be done; like tuning"... anyway, if any swearing was done it mostly was done in good humour..

BTW, the Gulf News review is absolute shite....

I suspected something along those lines... Thanks a lot for the heads up, Omer!

Mark does a great job tuning the guitars but they are very sensitive to all kinds of climates and get out of tune easily. David likes his instruments to be tuned perfectly and usually spends a minute or two to get them back on track...

Actually to be honest, those few moments of silence where David tuned his guitar or got the gear in order were absolutely fine. I just always feel that the audience needs to 'chill' for lack of better word when they are at a concert. Let the artist be, to work their own pace... what seriously is the rush?

I hope David gets an opportunity to play a small venue (intimate gig) sometime in Dubai... that would be the best. The crowd for those are generally very good.

It would be great to actually find out what David felt about the Dubai concert and the crowd... does he ever share his views with others...especially on the forum?..

I totally agree. After all artists are sensitive persons and no machines. I always liked waiting for artists to get ready inbetween songs, it gives time to exhale and a thrill of anticipation for what is to come.

Just to add to the excellent review from Omer, I was there too having gone over for the weekend as described in my earlier post. The atmosphere was terrific and certainly more like a festival than a concert which was good in some ways but not so good in others. David would certainly not have been familiar to many of the people that were there on the night and there were certainly a few who were shall we say, there for the beer rather than the music and seemed more interested in partying and chatting (or rather shouting in each other's ears), than the music but then I suppose that's to be expected at this sort of event.

This aside it certainly was a memorable gig - David and the band were on top form, a superb 90 minute set and a great encore. I was going to try and write a set list but being the muppet I am, I forgot to take a pen! I tried to take a few photos with my vastly inadequate, no-zoom digital camera which haven't turned out brilliantly but I'll still post a few to give people an idea:

Regarding the comments about the swearing - I did hear one f word and one s word but this was just an off the cuff comment between two songs while David was re-tuning. You'd certainly hear worse on the Brit awards and while I wasn't personally offended, I don't know whether others there would have been either but at the end of the day it's not like it was malicious so if there is any fuss, it's not really justified.

I won't bang on about Dubai as a destination as this isn't a forum for holiday reviews other than to say we both had a great time there. (didn't make the indoor ski slope but then we've got one of them in Tamworth :-)  and I already did one of those when I went to Shanghai).

People who have yet to see David on tour and definitely in for a treat, it's great show, a very polished perfomance and a big thanks to David and the rest of the guys for a truly memorably night.
