The new drummer is making the music sound like something from a work's Christmas do. (Just listened to the bootleg on another post) The second best thing about David Gray's music was Clune and after giving the new bloke many listens, and seeing him live at St James Square, it seems that he doesn't fit somehow. I'm no musician so maybe I'm wrong? Also, has he taken that black polo T-shirt off yet, it looks like my dad's, treat yourself to a new one mate. Maybe the next album will prove me wrong...I hope so.

Well, after seeing him play at seven concerts in a row I couldn't disagree more. I and many more whom I spoke to after the shows were impressed by what he did. I haven't had a chance to listen to that bootleg yet but please remember that even an excellent bootleg cannot replace a proper professional recording. His drums got over very powerful and strong during the live shows, I guess it will be hard to catch that properly on a bootleg. Besides, I fail to see what connection his choice of clothing can possibly have to the music he is making. Chaqu'un à son gout. Just for the record, I remember him wearing neat suits and shirts at shows.

Thanks for the reply, there is no connection with the clothing, just thought it lets the side down a bit. Seven shows!! are you getting in for free? if not that seems obsessive doesn't it, bet he thinks you're stalking him. "Achetez-vous un costume agréable"

Hi Woldig, I have just noticed that you were referring to the Bare Bones gigs at SJSS in July. You can't compare those with what Keith Pryor is like these days. He had just joined them back then. By now he truly is a part of the band. And me stalking David ? (I assume you meant him not Keith) No way; I have had plenty of excellent opportunities to do so this year but I would never bother him.

Well Woldig, I have to concur with Rena. Keith was brilliant on drums and with the new sound that some of the songs have, he is a key part of the whole experience. This guy put his heart and soul into his efforts and the result was a truly sincere and spectacular performance. And as for his clothing, I could see the sparkle on his black shoes and he obviously spent a lot of time shining those things up. He was wearing the same suit as the other fellows, took his jacket off but left his tie on the whole time he was playing. Yes Clune wore Hawaiian shirts etc.and was a good drummer. But Keith had heart I tell you and it takes character to persevere when people who make comments without having experienced the shows take cracks at him. Hope you get a chance to see one of the upcoming gigs with Keith so you won't have to guess at it anymore

This one from the Manchester Apollo right here in this thread. I haven't had a chance to listen to it though.

Totally agree Rena - apart from Luzern being his first gig (or one of the first) remember the whole premise of these Bare Bones gigs was to strip the music down to the basics - I think a direct response to the direction David decided to go in post Clune. Finally - and related to the two points above - the acoustics at the KKL in Luzern were absolutely phenomenal so I think Keith purposefully was holding back. Just one man's thoughts....................and we are definitely stalking him! Although I admitted tonight and told him that after Dublin, NYC and Boston he would be sick of the two crazies going bezerk in front of him!

hi wildig 1 i agree with you the new drummer sounds realy bad, people dont realise in a band the singer is supported by the drummer on sound and time but to be blunt the new man is no way as good as clune, who could do the drum section the way clune does it live to please forgive me, clune was very much part of sir david grays music, how can you get another man to give the same performance to a man who has had full design of the music in the drum section, i would rather here the new drummer not play the old stuff only the new to protect clune and his memory ps, keep the horses leaping man

Ill give the guy a chance when I see him live, after all everyone deserves fair chance right? Ive listened to a bootleg of Please Forgive Me....and so far I am not sold. I find it hard to listen to because for me it isnt the same. I can hear the difference in drum playing. (not just PFM but other songs as well just arent the same in the drum dept & that is to be expected as it isnt the original drummer for the songs we have grown to know so well)
To each their own in choice of sound, music, notes etc....not everyone will agree. As someone who lives with a musician, a drummer...I can hear many differences in PFM, everyone plays the drums differently then the next guy or gal. For me personally...he isnt as strong as Clune. Clune is one of the strongest drummers I have ever listened to....and Ive heard many a tune. I am not a musician no, but am entitled to my opinion like everyone else & have likes and dislikes that everyone might not be in agreement with...thats what makes the world go round. We cant all like the same thing....the world would be a boring place.
I dont really care about his clothes but the magic he plans to use on his drum set for me to hear on the 2nd of December in Toronto, and I do hope he can change my mind. (and no I dont need to be told that he is different live then a bootleg or professional version, I was able to read above what was written, well please read my above) They have not been playing together for that long , so maybe there isnt that musical bond yet as there hasnt been enough time for them to really know each other musically, maybe it will grow and maybe it wont. Some bands/groups never achieve that musical bond. Its not about wether they like or dislike each other, its about being able to feel each other in note musically. Cheers!

okay i'm gonna chime in now: Clune: I met the guy, i know the guy, he is by far the best drummer i've ever seen. I hate to be redundant but i too disagree with the choice to be rid of Clune. I agree with Kris, there's a big difference in the drumming. It seems a bit stark now, no feeling because spanning 15 years now it's all clune's drum beats that he knew and could play around with.
For the new drummer, i have to say i'm very impressed with the progress he has made, and yes i'm still not 100% sold. The Luzern thing i thought was a joke, not going to lie... but seeing the other gig w/ Ryan Seacrest, the improvement was incredible! The bootleg, there was again more improvement, but not perfection.
From what i have been hearing, i think there are a few missed points.. this is based on the bootleg. - The speed of the music seemed a bit rushed for a few (Hospital food, PFM, Be Mine).. sometimes a faster song is fine a little slower.
- I personally think the beats are mostly generic.
- Loud on the snare, cymbal crashes on beat one or four mostly..
- (i think he needs another tom or two) Clune was a master on those Tom beats. Hell let's throw in the no-smoking barrel drum too. haha..
So i am not sold yet on this guy, when he comes to boston i'll be telling you all about it - i am not doubting him yet. I'm very much looking forward to seeing them.
A million to one outsiders.
