I also hope for some Radio Edits oder Single Versions, as I search for the Radio Edit Version of Please Forgive Me with the squeeky keyboard/synthie-thing in the beginning for YEARS now... Tongue Tied

And btw: Why is the Greatest Hits album not called "Graytest Hits"? Or would that joke be way too obvious? Big Smile

Thanks Adie! That is an awesome version. I like it better than the CD version. Although I can imagine that one will do better on the radio. Big Smile

True, true...this guy hit the nail on the head.  How can you ignore 'Flesh'?  Yes, that Hospital Food song is so hullabaloo too.  The fact that DG ignores his best material, tells me that future material will be more like bad Hospital Food.  I will still check out his new material when it comes again, but my expectaions are not high for this once great singer/song writer.  I rememember in 96' listening to 'Flesh' over 'The Bends'...both excellent albums.  When DG was touring with Radiohead, I bought tix to go see him and Radiohead was just an added bonus.  Now it is quite the opposite...Radiohead continues to produce great albums and DG has started his downword spiral after White Ladder.

I hope that tracklist gets re-worked.  I can find about 25 DG songs better than Hospital Food.  Plus, if that tracklist is true, it ignores, 'Flesh,' which includes The Light, Coming Down and Falling Free.

In Germany "Hospital Food" was kinda successful, some radio stations played it all over. And as it is a "Greatest HITS" record to come, it is understandable that it contains, well, "hits" that got airplay. We recently had a Best Of the Early Years, so now it is a record to contain tracks from the past three albums. That's it.

You are right with saying a retrospective on DGs work should include ALL his albums. But DG and his guys decided to do it within two steps, early years, later (successful) years, so accept that there is only "new" material on this new Hits-compilation.

But man, I personally think that you're definitely wrong about DGs work after WL - I think that LISM is maybe his best album ever. And it is a bit weird in my opinion to cry for the times that DG put on aguitar and stood up in front of a handful of people to do his pure folk - I mean how long is that ago?? It's been great at that time, don't get we wrong, I love his early work too, but artists get older and develop. I'm very fine with that. And I'm sure his new studio album will get fan-freakin'-tastic!

    No offense, just another opinion...Wink

I didn't get into the older music until after White Ladder so my experience is somewhat different perhaps.  It was not until LISM  (which I really loved) that I truly appreciated the older music too because I could see so many different sides to his artistry.  Some songs I heard years ago didn't grow on me until this year, which is weird because usually if I like an artist I have favourite songs that don't change over time.  Originally I had a hard time listening to NBness, but now it is one of my faves.  I never really listened to Lullaby and now I have it playing in the car regularly.  I am not that concerned about what is on the Greatest Hits, I do however like the new World To Me track and am anxious to hear Destroyer.

On the website IndieLondon today I found this review by Jack Foley:

    David Gray - Greatest Hits

    David Gray, Greatest Hits

    Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 4 out of 5

DAVID Gray may have trained as a painter at the Liverpool College of Art but he’s since become an artist of a very different kind – and a very successful one at that!

In the 17 years since he decided to pursue a career in music, Gray has emerged as one of the finest singer-songwriters in the country, capable of some truly emotional power-ballads in the style of tracks like Babylon, his breakthrough success, Sail Away, Please Forgive Me and The Other Side.

Incrediby, it took time. In the first eight years of his music career, he was dropped by two record labels over the course of three albums, A Century Ends, Flesh and Sell, Sell, Sell. But then Gray retreated to his own house to write and release White Ladder on his own label.

To date, that album has sold six million copies worldwide and helped to establish Gray as one of the UK’s most popular and enduring artists. In Ireland, White Ladder remains the best-selling album of all-time.

Since then, he’s enjoyed another two UK No.1 albums and won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award twice – in 2001 for Babylon and in 2003 for The Other Side.

He has also won a GQ Award for Best Solo Artist (2002), a Q Award for best single (2001) and has been nominated twice for best male at the Brit Awards.

Such accolades are richly deserved, as Gray is fast becomig a national treasure. His voice is powerfully distinct- raw, passionate and at times heartbreaking. In live form, it’s astonishing and it’s little wonder that his three-song set with Damien Rice formed one of the highlights of this summer’s Live Earth bill.

The Greatest Hits LP contains 14 songs that span Gray’s musical career. Needless to say, the majority stem from his most popular albums but there are a few that showcase a talent that was left overlooked for some time.

One such track is Flame Turns Blue, a song originally recorded in 1999 that appears on the Lost Songs record. It begins with an acoustic guitar accompanying Gray’s stark vocals and slow-builds into an absolutely beautiful ballad, complete with pianos and drums. It’s one of those tracks you’ll wish you’d discovered earlier and is a highlight of the Greatest Hits collection.

Likewise, Caroline, a track that is “eccentric” by Gray’s own admission, having been written on his computer using lots of blips and bleeps and drum machine sounds. It works surprisingly well.

New single You’re The World To Me kicks things off in typically solid fashion, effectively showcasing the epic sweep and emotive power of the artist’s songwriting and vocals.

And then the hits speak for themselves. Babylon hasn’t really shown any sign of ageing, Please Forgive Me continues to stir the emotions, Be Mine is a rousing love anthem, This Year’s Love remains one for the hopeless romantics, and Sail Away offers one of two knee-tremblers, along with The Other Side.

And a live recording of Shine also provides a welcome reminder of why Gray is considered such a terrific live artist too.

The overall verdict? This is a fine Greatest Hits collection that ought to make a perfect stocking filler for countless listeners this festive season.

Download picks: Sail Away, The Other Side, Be Mine, Babylon, Please Forgive Me, Flame Turns Blue
