Only the Lonely is very underrated. Has anyone really closed listed to the music of this song and then the lyrics seperately and then both at once. Its an amazing song.
    A Century Ends...Lost Songs 95-98

Sell, Sell, Sell.....Life In Slow Motion

December is a song that I would say is just as raw and meaningful as The Other Side, yet hardly gets mentioned. In fact, I think as an album ANDAM is very underrated. David has been very critical of it since LISM, saying he didn't feel it moved on from WL (both musically and lryically) and that he felt he had just stepped sideways with it.

ANDAM was a lot darker in theme, but I don't think what David says is true. There is some really great, understated songs on there and some interesting sounds too that certainly developed on WL. Kangaroo, Long Distance Call and Knowhere are a few that hardly ever get mentioned (though it's great to see LDC back on the setlist these days). Yet they are a strong essence of the very gentle, angry and defeatest theme to the album. It's a much more layered album than I think fans ever gave it credit for.

Over My Head (B-Side to Babylon) is a really interesting song. It's completely different to his sound at the time and ahead of itself by a good few years. I think this may be the only published song that has featured a prominent female backing singer too, which is strange as it works really well.

    .. Madder Rain...

Just for anyone who might be interested, a full uncut version of Madder Rain is on the end credits to 'A Way Of Life' on DVD plus it's in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound which really brings it to life. There's a nice short alternate mix of From Here You Can Almost See the Sea, along with various isolated piano exceprts throughout the film. I've said it before - and I'll say it again! - but it would be really great for these to be released as B-sides or something.

Slightly off topic, but A Way of Life is a great film in itself and worth hunting down. Most UK online shops haven't had it in stock for well over a year, so I had to go to eBay. It's worth it, I promise!

    costanza,

I couldn't agree with you more. I know a lot of people on here don't rate ANDAM, but I just love it. I think we can forgive Dave when he is being critical of it, he was going through a tough time. I think, believe and hope that one day, the sun will shine over ANDAM for him and when he can handle the pain, he will realise that within ANDAM lies some of his best creations Big Smile.

It must have been exhausting in every respect to have spent a year of promo/touring reciting the exact same stories. I guess very quickly you would learn to just issue the standard answers you know journalists want. ‘Pain is fame’ and that. I don’t think you can be left with any other feeling than that you’re trivialising these very personal experiences. It would leave you with a lot of ill-feeling, so I think David being critical of it is very understandable.

I remember the song Caroline was really disliked on here, but I think it fits in well with the album. It’s kind of like the blind, misguided notion of combating the dark moments of life with forced positivity. So you act a bit silly, make all these extravagant plans and try, ultimately failing, to boost yourself up through someone else. Of course, that’s just my take. To some, it’s just a “cheesy song with a dreadful guitar noise”.

Anyway, besides psychoanalysing it all, I just love the sound of it (as, clearly, do you MyCariad!). As much as I enjoy the old stuff, I don’t think I’d be as much of a fan had it not been for its release.

I've just been listening to Greatest Hits whist doing housework, and as different as Caroline is, and different isn't bad, it always makes me smile. I wonder if the people who dislike it fast forward to the next track or if they actually listen to it and sing along to it. Anybody? Perhaps, one day he will breathe new life into it and we'll all love it, only if he wanted to though, but for me, it's fine as it is Big Smile,

Here in Holland, anything apart from Babylon is underrated.... Stick out tongue

Boy, did I try and make some DJ's play The World to Me a while ago.... and although I had some small bits of success it was hard...  still think it is an absolutely brilliant track ... but hey thats me...

But now for some real underrrated tracks... I would say... eh eh.. New Day at Midnight, Lights of London, Long gone now, As I'm Leaving, A clean pair of eyes... that sort of stuff.

    Take care !

    Marcel.

Further to your post Marcel, I am finding that DG is getting more airplay around here on some of our local radio stations.  I have had several people who i have introduced to the music tell me that they hear his music on the radio regularly and it sounds like more than just Babylon.  About time.
We are family, I got all my sistas with me..

In total agreement that much of his music is under appreiciated.  I like his hits but I've been listening since 93 when I got ACE on a "no risk" section of a record store.

I danced my kids to sleep with Gathering Dust and Falling Free and The Mystery of Love blow me away 10 years later.  Nobody's mentioned Lead Me Upstairs.  I have a live version from a show in 1999, it's amazing.  It's on a cd single, of which I can't tell you what hit it's attached to.

One more before I go...The live version of "Lately" from the I-tunes interview.  Worth the price of entry all by itself.

The album A Century Ends has been in my cd player for quite a while now...I just seem to keep listening to it. And the two cuts that I seem to listen to most often are Debauchery and Living Room. Two songs that just could not possibly be more fun. Pick me up and give me a smile everytime.

And if life's just a living room, then I'm in the hall...and I'm glad. Woah, I'm glad, I'm glad!

    "What Am I Doing Wrong"

This is also one of the most underrated DG songs! This song has such an hypnotic refrain!
