I have listened to White Ladder countless times over the last few years, and I just recently became addicted to Silver Lining. I saw that only two or three people had it in their top five lists below. I can't believe it never hooked me before, but now it might be my favorite song by him (although that changes all the time). It might just get lost in the shuffle a bit in the middle of a great album (although some could say the same thing about Nightblindness or the title track). What would be your pick for the best DG song that maybe goes a little bit under the radar?

I think all of David's underrated songs come off of Sell, Sell, Sell. His fushion with electric and folk on this album shows the begginings of the White Ladder sound. The best songs on this album are Magdelena, What Am I Doing Wrong, Gutters Full of Rain.

I'd say Folk Song..... it seems no-one else ever talks about it, and when they do it's often in negative tones. I think it's such a powerful song.

i think Slow Motion is quite overrated.... I was reading a review of LISM on sputnikmusic.com and the person who reviewed it said they "don't understand how Slow Motion got on the album" I think it's a great song, with such emotion and power. It really grabs you!!

How about As I'm Leaving from Lost Songs... beautiful song, yet no one seems to have it in their top 5.

Another underrated David Song is A Clean Pair of Eyes. This song easily fits into any of the phases of David's career with its epic piano and stunning lyrics. It is definatly one of his best.

I believe that one of David Gray's most underrated songs is from his first album, A Century Ends.Lets the Truth Sting seems to be a very underrated song. Ive seen no one really talk about it during the 2 years ive been on this BB.LTTS is one of my favorite songs. There words are amazing, filled with such emotion and anger. Unfortunatly the only version of LTTS i have is the album version, unlike some other songs where i have 2-3 version of them.
A Century Ends...Lost Songs 95-98 Flesh.................A New Day at Midnight Sell, Sell, Sell.....Life In Slow Motion White Ladder......A Thousand Miles Behind The EPs 92-94

I to be honest think all of David Grays music are underated. Most people listen to the songs without actually listening to the words but to my mind he puts most poets to shame with the depth and descriptions he gives. As for an actual song thats a hard one but I do like David in acoustic mode I must say and lullaby, falling free ,lovers etc are superb and should of made the guy a star long before he actually became one

Every single one of the songs you guys listed is in my DG top ten!My favourites are split evenly between the rockin' songs and the *really* sparse quiet numbers (some of which have been mentioned already): Birds without wingers, gutters full of rain, gattering dust, falling down the mountain side, mystery of love, lullaby, as I'm leaving, if your love is real, tidal wave, flame turns blue, and my two favourites eeeeeever: L's Song and Folk song. And the more lively ones I love are: made up my mind, let the truth sting, the rice, wisdom.

Beem, As I'm Leaving is my favorite DG song. No doubt about it. My favorite DG line is in that song... "and there's no meaning in clothes and coffee cups. cheap hotel furniture the silence never stops."

I have always loved As I'm Leaving. I also think Wurlizter, though short and lyric-less, is hauntingly beautiful. And not to mention January Rain, which is one of my favourites and quite under-rated.[ 16 August 2006: Message edited by: fizzingwhizbee ]

Mine would probably be Gathering Dust from A Century Ends, Sail Away- the song he played on Letterman the first time I actually was aware of him. Great, great stuff. To Summers- have you heard Bonnie Raitts cover? I am not a Bonnie fan, but she named her album(?) Silver Lining- worth a listen.
