Thanks so much for such a thorough review! Sounds just beautiful. I'm curious about the crowd, were they attentive and did they seem like fans? Looked packed...a little like a college kegger (those were the days).

Tidal Wave and a solo Nemesis??? Good Lord! TWO NEW SONGS?? This is just getting ridiculous!  :) Looking so forward to what's next...I wonder if it's a completely different set, or more of the same. Will be scouring you tube for footage of last night....

    thanks everyone!!

hope I address most of the questions/comments

with regard to the new songs I am not sure AK - but they didn't sound at all familiar so my guess is no

I don't do well with new stuff - same with new cds - it usually takes me a few spins through to even start to get it so I am probably not the best reporter on this topic - plus I found it very difficult to concentrate and type at the same time - anyhoo we shall see today - I am actually hoping for a re-play so I can digest better - we shall see

ryan - what I have heard on the new album is it is currently a collection of ideas so still early but some progress - my guess is late 12 or early 13

very funny on the college kegger lara!! indeed it was - and that damn column was a real problem lol! we shall see but we are certainly not showing up at 11am like a certain someone I know would do lol........we will do the same this time and pop in for the end of ingrid and then just enjoy DG - a good plan for us!

the crowd was definitely sundance hip and there for that reason - there was much support though for each of lisa, ingrid and DG so of course they were known......I got the feeling though there were only a few that were there like we were lol!!

ok today we start a little later but still an afternoon affair - we will head out in a few hours - more to come!!

and yes indeed jenko a return to the old avatar just may be in order - this is certaily one for the books!

    ok so here goes............

first and foremost so i set the record straight about the ridiculousness that I am - yes I have been blessed in this life to get rewarded for pursuing what I love - I started as a busboy at 15 and never have left the business - so whatever - I will say that most of this is ingenuity, audacity, persistence, creativity and yet all along with a nod to respect - i will never try to outsize any relationship established - I hope lol!

i do beleive in one good turn deserves another - so I try to help as much as I ask - at the end of the day though i acknowledge i am as selfish a *** as anyone so i am constantly pushing to just get back to par if you know what I mean.

so accept or not we had one of the most unbeleiveable days of my entire life. if yesterday was heaven on earth today we reached the skies.......................and the day started with the sky as blue as the caribbean.......

alex in his second day skiing ever hitting the blue slopes - like I said BEAST! and then a chill and back down to park city - such a pretty little town and such a great setting for this sundance stuff - absolutely perfect!

and then we ended up on a sofa backstage with a direct line to DG. if I could say it I would shout a certain four little word beginning in f - %$$! and sitting next to a former "party of five" actor lol!

    so here goes.............

Ain't No Love after my intial shock and then quick realization Marcel was screwed in his prediction I sank into it - another damn column prevented my view but his backside on piano so I just sank into a solemn trance while hugging coty tight - a really nice surprise and we both just loved it

Sea!!!!!!!!!!!!! are you f-in kidding me?! didn't expect - not sure why in retro - but just awesome - a real highlight of the two days I might add - the crowd started to get it at that point

and to interject here - and for miralake - the crowd today was WAY better - huge much respect for DG and very funny and ooutspoken at the same time - more to come on this but BIG difference in both of our opinions

Flame! will never tire and I think with Sea worked very very well with this audience

Jackdaw!!!! awesome!! very strong performance with David belting!! loving the dtil and foundling support in each set list yet still a nod to the past - as I will say in a bit I think the three new songs all accomplish that as well - allow for the new direction but with ties to the past

Dancing with my feet off the ground (new song!!) AK this was London! was awesome - called it a romatnic little song - played on the piano - really liked it and thought the best of the new songs - until I heard Vegas again

TYIL Not expected but ver welcomed - nice moment with the mrs I may add - at the end DG said "wow we got a little carried away there!" - in a direct reference to an absolutely rousing rendition of the song! To which Maria responded "we forgive you!" lol

Hold On!!!!!!!! Awesome.........his tuning of the guitar in advance of the song was also a funny repeat of yesterday of his bemoaning the old days - nice

World To Me!! on piano of course - fun entertaining and got everyone's attention - good moment!

Snow in Vegas mentioned that was written just before xmas.........and as always i will gladly admit my wife is right - this is clearly the best song of the three new ones - and I am hurrying downstairs so no big review - suffice to say I cannot imagine not getting it at the cosmo!

Forgetting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so he starts out with something about acoustics and the nature of his album foundling.....and loving this acousitc setting - so he says and now we have the "quietiest of all the quiet songs" ................

this was one of the most pure moments I have ever experienced in 49 years of existence - it was absolutely numbing and you could hear a pin drop in the crowd - an incredibly special moment - my whole time ever spent in admiration of the artist that DG is crystalized at this very moment!

It Accumlates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just when one had been to the mountain top lol it got better - so unexpected and so awesome.........at this point it was very very clear he ahd crushed it tonight and again i think the crowd really realized that - very appreciative

Babylon!! ok alex waiting downstairs lol...................funny shout out before the song for "rocky mountain high" - more singing!!

Nemesis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't wnat to bore with more spiritual type stuff but all I will say that this version tonight - consistent with today and this gig - was possibly the most intense version of this song I have ever witnessed - I really do hope they start showing ont he tube as DG doing this song solo acousitc is absolutely amazing .............the tears??!! they were of tremendous joy!!!!

TYL a crowd pleaser to go .............

like I said and I think I relayed my emotions int he text - a simply amazing and unforgettable evening

    a few pics..............

and the ever present DCA hero Jerry.......

    good night!

David Gray Serenades at Sundance ASCAP Music Café

Posted Jan 27, 2012, by Claiborne Smith

Although he’s never been tested this way, David Gray could probably keep his audience hooked while singing the text of a John Deere tractor catalog. Gray performed on Thursday at the Sundance ASCAP Music Café on Lower Main Street to a packed house. The Café was more than packed, actually - there were people perched on steps, people pressing against the barriers set up to ensure the fire department wasn’t going to shut down the house. Judging from the beatific expressions on their faces, all those people showed up because Gray has a power to emotionally connect with them, past the noise of life.

Gray was the last performer on Thursday, following Ingrid Michaelson, who sang from her new album “Human Again,” and other musicians like Natasha Bedingfield and The All-American Rejects who sang this week after being invited by ASCAP.

Gray performed several of his major hits, including “Babylon,” which had the audience more than signing along - it was like a believer’s chant. There was a group of loud people briefly acting up in the back corner and the bartender shushed them. Gray inspires that kind of reverence. He sang “Nemesis,” “Draw the Line,” and an earlier song, “This Year’s Love,” which he said is “for the romantics.” Wistful, sad, honest, and a little raw, Gray’s songs hit people right in the heart, but there’s also something restrained about him, something existential that keeps his work from feeling sentimental. He sang “Morning of My Life,” an early Bee Gees song “before they started doing falsetto,” as Gray put it. He also sang “Snow in Vegas,” a new song that hasn’t been released yet. After about 45 minutes of listening to David Gray, even the Festival volunteer assigned to forbid access to the front of the stage with his stern, authoritative face looked a little emotional.

Love the last comment Big Smile

    Marcel.
