haha oh so we did discuss eh??!!

very nicely done there christine - thanks for opening up!!

I am the first to glean as much passion as I can from DG but on this one it never hit me the way it did for you - talk of rice, broccoli and spatulas makes me very nervous - I avoid the kitchen at all costs lol

but yeah on a cd with the likes of birds, the light, shine, wisdom and coming down this one was pretty much lost in the mix for me

all in all it just goes to show how folks can vary in their opinions and interpretations so all good!

That's just the point!!  There's NOTHING passionate about rice, broccoli, or spatulas!  The way the two are juxtaposed is one of the reasons it's so brilliant!

again we are just going to have to agree to disagree my dear

to me there is a world apart from:

Out on the roof over havoc streets
Where the sky is a blanket each sweet kiss
    so melodramatic embroidered by shadows
    by the fridge I reminice

    to................for example:

Cos when I hold you naked
    When I hear you laugh
I got a sword to stem the rivers
And cut the moon in half

    but meh!

I'm not disagreeing... I'm just plain right!  hahaha.  No, I hear what you're saying.  Be traditional; fall for the bells and whistles and glittery words, that's fine with me ;)

There is an inherent beauty in all of his songs, in all of life.  But I, personally, enjoy finding beauty in the mundane.  It's just my thing.  And the two verses that you chose are apples and apples, though perhaps red and green.  There is no argument here,  How could there be?!

Haha, tbh i've never thought that much about the song.. but Christine, your response was AMAZING.

Oh my god, the amount of thought that went into the reply was just so creative! The more i do actually think about the lyrics it makes perfect sense.

    ..More please!

I agree, really good. Although musically the song is still very subpar. But I'll have a listen to it again..

You're staring at the sky, but the moon ain't gonna pay our bills.

At last, there is someone else out there who is willing to admit that they like "The Rice"!!! And it is purely coincidental that we are both named Christine... Poo-poo to its being a weak song - haven't any of you ever listened to the background melody btwn the guitar, piano and mandolin? "and you are all unhinged..." can't you hear the passion in that??? Open you ears/your hearts and think back to what your first/only love-carnally based relationship was like. Don't tell me that we're all a bunch of Puritans here - to get the most out of life you sometimes have to live in the moment and that is what this is about - Let the rice burn...

    The "other" Christine

Add me. I do love The Rice. Just for the record.

Edited to say that it is very interesting to see everyone's interpretations of songs and how they all differ from each other. How David's songs manage to meet us all at different stages of our respective lives. Brilliant.

I love The Rice too. But I could never have expressed my thoughts as beautifully as Christine has done. Very well done Christine. I am so impressed at the articulate, thoughtful interpretations on this thread. It's a pleasure to read. Thanks everyone!

Add me to the Rice fan list too. I haven't listened to it for a while but it sure brings some sexiness to mundane food preparation, well at least when it comes to instant.

I enjoy it as well. See, you are far from being the only one. I feel the same way about it and the only other song I can think of that uses the word spatula is Weird Al's Spatula City......Don't even ask why I know that song.

    Lollipop Girl!!!!!

Don't listen to just half of the story...Get the details before you form your opinion.

    ok then back on topic

and this for our dear telephone who chides me about not wanting to open up lol - send her best thoughts por favor as she deals with some health issues back home and most likely won't be around too much in the coming weeks - but she is the rock that holds it all together so we keep our hopes up that all turns out ok

    nightblindness

this song just brings me back to the early days of our marriage............when nothing was certain save our love for one another yet also moving through the relationship to having experienced the joys as well as the real struggles - and all the way trying to find confidence in yourself so you can truly love

how we gonna find the eyes to see a brighter day?

struck by the nightblindness but trying to see - yet with such beautiful melodies it carries for me a positive vibe throughout...................

what we gonna do when the money runs out? - living paycheck to paycheck - I wish there was something left to say - my worries about my failing her and us

but we somehow seemed to indeed find a way in those days - with maria who in classic fashion as the rock of our relationship took a job halfway across town when we only had one car and never said a word about taking the bus - in a shitty hot hell hole of a town where no one takes the bus (in texas but not dallas lol).........................just for us to try to make a go of it

    but then classic david

I'm sick of all the same old answers
    Lost chances, cold stones
    Propping mountains up on matchsticks
    Dragging baskets full of bones

So screw it be yourself don't worry what "they" have to say with their shallow world of "mountains" with no substance..................

and the last lines of the actual song again reenforced the positive notion of a "brighter day" - and combined with the wonderful melodies and improvisation - just lead you to hope in the end

we first heard the extend outro in luzern and I think it important to note that in the earlier days of that wonderful outro he just got waaaay into the wooooo oooh yeah stuff with no real lyrics per se- just a beautifully magic improv into space - for me giving me the positive energy to carry on and bring our love to a higher level

it wasn't until the greatest hits tour that he started with the verbage into the outro and more tugging at the heart - fast forward the career to more success but it gets complicated with all the travel

where were you when I needed you? me traveling and leaving her alone with a crying baby while I get to live it up laugh it up on the other side of the world.............

so yeah this song for me is about the trials and tribulation of our relationship - and reenforces how I will never ever forget how maria is always taking the bus in this relationship - but in the end it finds the beauty of the song and hope for the future............

    ok there lol

Awwww, nice work DCA!  My favorite part is the "ok there lol" ending.

I'm so coming back and reading this thread whenever I need an ego boost, or when I need to be reassured that DCA has a soft side :)
