short review as I was there

This was my 40th or so David Gray gig but my first in two years - used follow a lot of the earlier gigs in the mid to late 90s etc ..

There was a good crowd at it but it was not sold out. Short support slot from David Kitt as the crowd filled in.

The show was well received by the majority and everyone I spoke to after was pretty happy and impressed by the performance.

The show, imo, was good - very professional but lacked the imtimacy and passion of the earlier gigs. Possibly to be expected given the venue and context - a tent as part of the festival here.

The later albums dominated the setlist - 4 white ladder tracks, none from the first two albums, everytime now from sell sell sell, 4 new tracks - hard to gauge on first listens but two of them stood out - fugitive and one other (jackdaw mentioned in the first line? - can't remember title - jackdaw or jackie perhaps). The rest from the last two albums.

The highlight of the evening for me was the cover of Van's "And it Stoned Me" - wonderful version. Very focussed passionate believable performance.

The crowd in general responded enthusiastically throughout particulary for This year's love and Please forgive me.

The audience dynamics throughout were entertaining - lots of singing along; not all good - had to move once to escape the horrendous loud butchering of the tunes by these two 'fans' - wonderfully bad singing. I was somewhere between annoyed at the intrusion and laughing at the sheer awfulness of the singing. The new songs were treated with less attention - most were there for the sing-a-long aspect and in fairness, David Gray responded and gave his best to cover the 'hits'.

The new songs and the cover though, imo, received more attention from the performaer and I got the impression, he was more interested and committed in the performance of these.

Overall, a good show, but not like the great shows of several years ago.

Obvioulsy a subjective view and I have to admit to liking the more stripped down sound of his first three albums and the white album demos, lost songs etc. I was hoping throughout for a return to these or a rare rendition of Northern sea or something like that. Also have to admit, I think I was in the minority with this view. Most people seemed to be really pleased with the gig.

Thanks for your review Galwayc and welcome here !

As you are one of the followers straight from the beginning, I understand that you enjoy the old tracks better than some of the new ones. You might have liked the gig in Lucerne better, as it was a semi-accoustic performance with 3 covers and few older tracks too.

Glad the reception was good, as always in Ireland Big Smile

The track you mentioned must indeed be Jackdaw, great track I think, but then again I like most of his stuff Wink

    Take care.

I thought it was a great show. Didn't think Kitt was up 2 much. I had a long wait from doors open to Mr Gray coming onto the stage but the great view was worth it. Set list was (in or around)

    1. The world to me
    2. The one i love
    3. Life in slow motion
    4. Babylon
    5. My oh My
    6. Destroyer
    7. Be mine
    8. The other side
    9. First Chance
    10. Jackdaw
    11. Fugitive
    12. Everytime
    13. Sail Away
    14. (Break)
    15. TYL
    16. And it stoned me
    17. Nemeses
    18. PFM

Thought Life in... , Babylon, First chance, nemeses and pfm were particular highlights. I love the way life in.. builds up towards the end. It struck me that some of the new songs had a different twist this time around that i enjoyed eg babylon when the drums came in strongly towards the end. Only home now, cant wait till a dublin show so there will be less traviling!!

Anyway if any1 has pics or vids i would love to see/hear.

Very much enjoyed the concert (my 5th DG gig), but felt it was a little too short.  Just over an hour in he said "Thank you Galway" and caught people off guard.  Thankfully he came back for the encore, but it all still could've lasted a bit longer.  Really enjoyed the new material - I have a feeling the new album "Draw the Line" is going to be some of his best work to date.

Davit KITT was dull, dull, dull.  Spent his set outside exploring the food stands, as I hadn't eaten all day.

Highlights for me were "My Oh My" - I've always loved that song, and it comes to life on stage.  Also the Van M cover was fabulous!  "Life in Slow Motion" is a superb live song - overlooked by some on the album, but winning new fans every time it's performed.

Due to the Interweb I had heard some of the new songs, but hadn't heard "First Chance", which I really enjoyed.   Jackdaw was very good, and I have a feeling it's going to be a grower.  Fugitive is an excellent crowd-pleaser, and an obvious choice for lead single from the new album.  Nemesis is a pleasing tune, which I haven't made my mind up about yet, but sounds good.

Was a little disappointed to end with "Please Forgive Me", as it's one of my least favourite tracks, but it did get the crowd going, and it showed off the band.

All in all, a very good performance, and great to see him again after more than a year.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. - Douglas Adams

Thank you everyone for your reviews and the setlist especially Smile

Very much looking forward to watching that video coverage in the eve. Just back from my travels and trying to work my way through all those new posts on here.

I was wondering if anyone could let us know what the improvised part of Nemesis was like? In Lucerne he added parts from Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' for instance.

    Thanks, Rena
